The Commuter

First Hit:  There are excellent and overdone parts in this engaging film.

I will start with that this film was very creative in providing the audience with the setup about who Michael MacCauley (Liam Neeson) is. He’s married, he has a very predictable routine, and he works hard to help his son get a good education. All this is delivered before the opening credits are complete. In other words, if you don’t get to the film on time, don’t bother because then the point of the film is lost.

At work one day, after closing another client on buying an insurance policy, he gets called into his boss’s office and gets terminated. Because the audience was part of his selling the insurance policy just a few moments earlier, we know how this puts him in deep financial straits.

Heading home on the train to tell his wife and son, he’s approached by Joanna (Vera Farmiga) who gives him a proposition, find someone on the train, put a tracking device in their bag, and be paid $100K. Given the financial situation he’s in, being a former cop, and his inquisitive nature he tries to solve the riddle.

However, soon after he begins, everything falls apart and the story gets intense real quick.

This is also where the film begins to get unreal, overly complicated, and overdone. How does Joanna know exactly what is happening on the train, moment by moment, is difficult to buy. The number of fights, the length of the fights, and how undamaged Michael is after all the fights wasn't realistic. The train crash, although spectacular, was not realistic. The crash lasted too long and wouldn’t have happened in the way that it did. Additionally there are a number of other scenes that were not realistic. However, it’s engaging because Neeson is always fun to watch and he’s a great “every” man.

Neeson is excellent as Michael. He can make an unrealistic film good enough to watch and stay engaged with. Farmiga was very good as the elusive Joanna. Her calm demeanor and controlled engaging voice really worked. Patrick Wilson as Police Lt. Alex Murphy was very good and convincing as walking two different sides of the street. Jonathan Banks as another commuter named Walt was very good. His gruff, yet inviting self, worked perfectly. Byron Willinger, Philip de Blasi, and Ryan Engle wrote a convoluted script, which delivered action. Jaume Collet-Serra directed the film with the assurance of having Neeson as his protagonist.

Overall:  Despite its flaws, it is a fun film to watch and it’s the actors that make it work.

Run All Night

First Hit:  The action is very strong, the acting is good and it’s hard to see older men attempt to move their bodies athletically.

Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson) and Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris) have been lifelong friends. They've been criminals for most of their lives.

Shawn has been the brains while Jimmy has been the muscle. Although Shawn has no problem killing someone, it’s been Jimmy that has racked up the kills and they haunt him. He left his wife and boy early on because he did not think he would be a fit enough father to be around his son Michael (Joel Kinnaman).

Michael resents his father and has chosen a life that, although difficult, is honorable. Shawn, on the other hand, has a boy named Danny (Boyd Holbrook) who is partly in the family business but keeps screwing up. When Danny kills a couple of crooked Albanians, Mike gets caught up and Jimmy kills Danny. This splits Danny and Shawn’s close relationship and now they’re out to kill each other.

Neeson is very good at showing determination and completing his appointed task with no feelings. Harris was very strong as the guy who has pulled the strings for years. Kinnaman was excellent as the bitter son. Holbrook was also very good as Maguire’s son. Common as professional hit man Andrew Price, was great. Brad Ingelsby wrote a strong script and Jaume Collet-Serra did a great job of creating a mood of NYC in this Irish community.

Overall:  The story of redemption of a difficult life was well done.

Non-Stop

Hit:  The generally unbelievable premise was kept interesting because of Neeson’s intensity.

Liam Neeson plays Bill Marks, a distraught US Air Marshal who hates flying and is caught up in a hijacking/blackmailing of a flight from New York to London. Sitting next to him is Jen Summers (Julianne Moore) who needs to sit next to the window.

During the flight Marks receives a text message on a secure communications channel. He suspects the other Air Marshal but ends up killing him – in accordance to the information and plan shared on the text messages. Every 20 minutes someone dies. The pilot and the entire Air Marshal team on the ground, think Marks is really the instigator to the hijacking.

The audience knows Marks is the good guy. Eventually we discover the real plot and the world is right. Although early in the film one doesn’t really know who the culprit, there are things one can read during the film which point the way. The best part of the film is Neeson and his ability to keep the audience engaged.

Neeson is strong and intense which is the best part of the film. Moore is good as a woman who is living life fully for the now. Michelle Dockery was OK as the flight attendant who assists Marks the most. Lupita Nyong’o was OK in a very minor role as another flight attendant. John Richardson and Christopher Roach wrote an unfathomable script. Jaume Collet-Serra did a reasonable job of directing this unrealistic film with some interesting shots of fighting in an airplane restroom and scenes where the plane dove and the passengers got tossed about.

Overall:  It was watchable but not because of the plot, script, or direction.

First Hit: A well done and well-acted suspenseful story.

The story starts quiet and with an even handedness as Liam Neeson plays Dr. Martin Harris heading to Berlin to give a talk at a biological convention. He is flying to Berlin with his wife Elizabeth (played by January Jones).

Upon realizing he left his briefcase at the airport, he finds a cab and heads back. On the way he is in an automobile accident, flies off a bridge and drowns. However, he’s only dead for a few minutes and he is brought back to life.

He has amnesia but ends up back at the hotel where he left his wife. He confronts his wife who says she doesn’t know him and then she introduces her husband Dr. Martin Harris (played by Aidan Quinn). Now we’ve got two Martin Harris’s and both of them make a good show as to who is the real one.

The film spends most of the time with Liam’s Martin trying to prove he is the real Martin Harris. The events are intense and Neeson proves to be the right man for this part. Towards the end we find out a whole new identity exists and from there the film ends with well executed twist.

Neeson is perfect for the part. He is smart, intelligent, intense and capable in physical altercations and movements. Jones is good as the wife of both Harris’s. Quinn is OK as the other Martin Harris. Bruno Ganz is wonderful as the old German spy/investigator assisting Neeson to find out who he is. Diane Kruger is great as the cab driver who ends up befriending Neeson’s Harris. Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell wrote an excellent and tight script and Jaume Collet-Serra’s direction was crisp, clear and concise.

Overall:  This film held and did not give away the surprise ending and action was well paced.
